Ked is very relatable and I appreciated the themes the book touched on. They look out the window to frozen Chickadee Lake to observe what appear to be inebriated men leaving their ice-fishing shanty. I believe the author chose “Thin Ice” as the title of this story because it represents the struggles of the main character Ked. This is my first Michael Northrop book. With her mother’s downward spiral into depression Brooke turns to hockey to take her mind of her troubles and joins the brand new girls hockey team. The characters are nuanced and relatable, and the various crises they are dealing with sucked me right in. Told with sensitivity, this well written novel will not disappoint readers who like books by this author as well as those tackling difficult issues. What normally would've taken me 3 -4 ish hours to finish - even with as many pages as this book has, took probably double that. The clear portrayal of what it means to live in a town where hope is a valuable resource will resonate with many readers. I want to say that I don’t expect YAs to be occasionally deep with beautifully poetic writing and lovably (or at least toleratedly) flawed. When you think of “thin ice”, what thoughts come to mind?
